There are instances when our practice is unable to offer certain services due to safety concerns or regulatory restrictions. However, this does not mean that you are without support. We are committed to guiding you towards the appropriate resources and assistance to address your needs effectively and safely. Our goal is to ensure you receive the best possible care, even if it means directing you to external programs or specialists.
Fear of Flying
We often receive requests to prescribe diazepam for fear of flying, but there are several compelling reasons why this is not recommended:
- Safety Concerns: Diazepam is a sedative that induces sleepiness and relaxation. In case of an in-flight emergency, it can impair your ability to concentrate, follow instructions, and react promptly. This could jeopardize your safety and that of others around you.
- Health Risks: While sedatives can help you fall asleep, the sleep induced is non-REM and unnatural. This reduces movement during sleep, increasing the risk of developing dangerous blood clots (DVT) in the legs or lungs, especially on flights longer than four hours.
- Unpredictable Reactions: Although diazepam typically causes sedation, a small number of people experience paradoxical effects such as agitation, aggression, and disinhibition. These reactions can compromise safety, disrupt the flight, and potentially result in legal issues.
- Medical Guidelines: According to the British National Formulary (BNF), benzodiazepines are contraindicated for treating phobias. Prescribing them for this purpose goes against medical guidelines and can pose significant legal risks. They are intended only for short-term use in cases of generalized anxiety crisis. Proper mental health support should be sought instead of using these medications for flying.
- Legal Issues: Diazepam and similar drugs are illegal in several countries. Traveling with them can lead to confiscation or legal trouble with local authorities.
- Drug Testing: Diazepam stays in your system for an extended period. If you are subject to random drug testing at work, taking diazepam could result in a failed test.
We understand that the fear of flying is very real and distressing. A more effective solution is to address this anxiety with a specialized Fear of Flying course offered by various airlines. We have listed several recommended programs below.
British Airways Flying with Confidence
Virgin Atlantic Flying without Fear
Information is also available on the NHS website about treatment for phobias
Ear Syringing
Our practice no longer provides ear syringing services. This decision has been made in alignment with our NHS contract, which does not commissions ear syringing as part of the services we offer.
Why Has Ear Syringing Been Discontinued?
Simple ear syringing is not routinely offered on the NHS anymore, as the procedure is no longer considered a first-line treatment for earwax removal. The NHS regularly updates its guidelines to ensure that patients receive care based on the latest clinical evidence. In many cases, earwax issues can be resolved without the need for syringing, and alternative methods are now recommended.
Managing Earwax at Home
Earwax usually falls out on its own without the need for intervention. However, if it does not and begins to block your ear, there are safe and effective ways to manage it at home:
- Use of Medical-Grade Olive or Almond Oil: If your ear becomes blocked, it is recommended to put 2 to 3 drops of medical-grade olive or almond oil into the affected ear 3 to 4 times a day. Continue this treatment for as long as necessary until the earwax softens and dissolves. This approach is often effective and may prevent the need for further intervention.
- Minor Ailments Scheme: If you are eligible, you may be able to obtain the oil required for this treatment through the Minor Ailments Scheme at your local pharmacy. Please inquire with your pharmacist to see if you qualify for this service.

When to Seek Further Help
You should only seek help from your GP practice if you are experiencing more serious symptoms or are unable to clear the earwax using the above methods. In such cases, your GP may be able to refer you to a specialist microsuction service, which is a more advanced and precise method of earwax removal.
Alternative Options for Earwax Removal
If you require professional earwax removal and home treatments are not effective, there are several private providers in the local area that offer earwax removal services. These services are not covered by the NHS, so charges will apply. You can find a list of local providers below.
