What is RSV?

RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) is a common virus that usually causes coughs and colds.

Most people catch RSV several times during their life and it often gets better on its own. However, RSV can be serious for older adults and may lead to chest infections and breathing problems.

What illnesses can RSV cause?

In some people, RSV can cause:

  • Pneumonia (a lung infection)
  • Serious breathing problems that may need hospital treatment

RSV infections can be life‑threatening, especially in older adults.

If you already have a lung condition, such as COPD, RSV can make your symptoms much worse.
